The black and white stamp has the illustration of Ahtisaari and the text "In Memoriam Martti Ahtisaari 1937–2023". In addition to the stamp, a first-day cover and stamp will be published. The text on the cover reads "Peace is a matter of will."
The mourning sign was designed by Timo Berry. The photo used in the sign was taken by Tuukka Koski. The stamp sheet contains ten domestic stamps.
"President Ahtisaari was an international celebrity who is known and respected especially for his peace work. Ahtisaari's stamp is designed as a portrait of indescribable value. The national role can be seen in the next day's stamp, which features the coat of arms of Finland. On the cover of the first day, I put perhaps his most important idea, which he presented in his Nobel speech: "Peace is a matter of will," says Timo Berry, who designed the sign.
President Martti Ahtisaari died on October 16 in Helsinki at the age of 86. He was born on June 23, 1937 in Vyborg. Ahtisaari served as the President of the Republic of Finland in 1994–2000. Ahtisaari received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2008.
The last time in Finland a mourning badge was issued in memory of President Mauno Koivisto in 2017. The memory of runner Paavo Nurme, composer Jean Sibelius and presidents Urho Kekkonen, PE Svinhufvud and Kyösti Kallio have also been honored with mourning badges.
Posti also honors Martti Ahtisaari's memory by making a donation to CMI's Peace Fund.
The Ahtisaari in Memoriam sheet contains 10 (ten) Finnish stamps.
