Throughout the 1930s, Swedes were by far the largest group of tourists in our country. There were as many Swedes here as Estonians, Germans and English combined. But the 1930s was also a time of language conflicts in Finland, and those working in tourism were worried about how it would affect the image of Finland in Sweden and elsewhere in the Nordic region. That's why the Swedish-speaking regions of Finland wanted to be highlighted as their own region, or as a 1930s brochure says: "You can get by in your own language, and above all, living is cheap!"
