Boats that are at sea for long periods of time have problems with fouling on the sonar transducer. Using normal antifouling paint is not recommended, as without protection you will quickly get fouling on the sensor. This interferes with the sensor's signals, which in turn gives poorer results on the sonar. Often the fouling also causes turbulence which further degrades the performance of the transducer, resulting in less detail and poorer depth readings. Propspeed from New Zealand has been supplying propeller fouling protection for more than 20 years. They have now used their experience to develop Foulfree, a revolutionary anti-fouling coating. Airmar, a world-leading manufacturer of sonar transducers, has tested Foulfree with such good results that they guarantee that it works and does not adversely affect transducers. Foulfree creates a translucent smooth surface that prevents fouling so that barnacles and seaweed cannot take hold. It is not a toxic paint that harms the environment but a coating that prevents organisms from taking hold. Foulfree can be applied to plastic and bronze sensors. Foulfree is delivered in a package with a sanding sponge, cleaning cloth, brush and a 15ml tube of Foulfree that is enough for a surface of 0.1m2.
