In 1959, Tapio Wirkkala's WIR lamp renewed lighting design. The linear opal glass lamp, which was connected with a reduced lamp cord, was awarded the following year at the XII Triennale in Milan. The product became an international success in an instant. Later, Wirkkala designed a whole family of lighting products alongside the lamp - different colored glass domes that emphasized the lamp's shape and pleasant light and brought variety to its simple elegance.
