The cold chisel is a sharp-edged tool suitable for cutting and breaking hard materials such as metal and masonry. The name 'cold' comes from the fact that the metal is not preheated before the tool is used. A cold chisel is ideal for cutting thick metal mesh or shaping masonry, for example.
Cold chiselling is as straightforward as wood chiselling: it is simply a matter of striking the chisel with a hammer. However, it is important to remember the safety procedures for protective equipment and the product:
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): wear gloves, goggles and thick clothing. Metal shavings and fragments can fly when working.
Sharpening: use fine grit bench grinding. When sharpening, move the chisel bevel and blade over the grinder. Remove the chisel from the grinder regularly to prevent excessive heat build-up.
Hammers. The wider the surface of the hammer, the more force is required at the expense of accuracy. The hammer head should be at least twice as wide as the chisel.
Lubrication. This will reduce friction and excessive heat build-up.
Hammering: hold the chisel at an angle of about 45° when carving pieces of metal. Hold at a 90° angle when making holes in material.
