Posti awarded the 2023 stamp art promotion award to the Åland-based art photographer Christoffer Relander, who is known here and around the world for his multi-exposure photographs combining human figures and nature.
Two photos by Relander have been chosen for the stamps:PerfumejaButterfly Mind II. Both photos are from the We Are Nature series, which Relander started in 2010. "The photo series continues and has become an increasingly personal project over the years. I photographed my own daughter for the new Butterfly brand," says Relander.
Relander is fascinated by the fact that with multi-exposure you can make pictures, not just take them. "Making a picture is similar to painting and visual design. Training as a graphic designer provides a good basis for managing shapes and silhouettes."
Nature and forests have been an important part of Relander's life since he was a child. "There is something human in the shapes and patterns of trees, leaves and branches. Hardwoods and especially oaks are my favourites.”
When photographing people, Relander wants to focus more generally on the human figure instead of the individual. "When the people in the pictures are anonymous, the viewer is left with more room for their own interpretation. Recognizable personalities would draw too much attention to themselves."
This year, the Posti Art Award, which is being awarded for the seventh time, was awarded to photography for the first time. With the art award, Posti wants to raise the appreciation and status of stamps and art.
