Power Grid is about electricity distribution. Players build power plants and run electricity grids from one city to another. Running power plants requires raw materials, the price of which depends on demand. Success requires accurate financial management. The game's two-sided board is full of cities on both sides and the networks drawn between them. On one side is the USA and on the other is Germany. Connections between cities have fixed prices. Players acquire power stations from the auction. There are different types of power plants: the quality and consumption of raw materials vary. In the beginning, there is only money for lousy power plants that produce electricity for the needs of one or two cities. At the end of use, there are more efficient power plants that generate power for numerous cities with the same consumption. Various raw materials (coal, oil, garbage and uranium - wind turbines that operate without raw materials are also available) are bought from the raw material market for the use of power plants. A certain amount of raw materials are added to the stock exchange every round, the final price level is determined by consumption. Thus, the popularity and price of different raw materials varies realistically during the game. Each turn, players combine cities with the goal of creating the most comprehensive electricity network. At different stages of the game, there are restrictions on how many players can bring power to one city - construction has very tactical dimensions. Once the network is built, the power plants are switched on and players get money based on how many cities they can generate power for.
