Forged timpani hammer with rubber handle. The forged flat shank of a barber's hammer allows the shank to withstand much higher impact forces than round shanks. The rubber grip ensures that the hammer stays firmly in the hand and does not slip when struck. Folded timpani hammers are used for heavy construction work, such as nailing trunk timbers, dismantling and installing frame structures and other construction tasks requiring heavy impact force. Forged hammers can only withstand perpendicular force and are not designed to hit pieces with their side edges.
