When it was launched in 1911, the Titanic was the largest ship in the world. With the help of three engines, the ship traveled across the English Channel to Cherbourg, Ireland and then across the Atlantic on its maiden voyage to New York.
Near midnight on April 14, 1912, the ship struck an iceberg. Within the next two hours, the ship sank, taking more than 1,500 people with it.

The elegant steamer was to be used in the prestigious Transatlantic liner service of the White Star Line. But already on the maiden voyage to New York, the Titanic collided with an iceberg on April 14, 1912 at around 11:40 pm (board time). The ship brushes against the iceberg on the starboard side and sinks into the icy waters of the Atlantic after two hours and forty minutes. Only 712 people survived the disaster.
