The shorter 80 cm is enough for the most common things that you want to attach to the outside of the backpack/chest, i.e. sleeping bags and sleeping pads. 120 cm, on the other hand, is suitable for various special needs, larger tent rolls, bundles of firewood, and is generally long enough for almost anything you could ever imagine wanting to use such a thong for. And hey, if you run out of length, you can always chain these together!
