Cows are very sensitive animals. Calves are protected by their mothers, who are immediately there if they are scared or cry out in hunger. Mothers lick their calves to calm them down.
After birth, the mothers gently lick the calves dry in the pen. After just a few days, they can join the other cows in the pasture to graze and play. A couple of weeks later they start eating grass and hay. However, they are not yet able to digest fresh green hay as well as full-grown cows. Therefore, calves continue to drink their mother's milk for six to twelve months. They are fully grown at around five years of age and can live to be 20-25 years old.
