We moved from free speeds through the 80 km/h general limit to permanent road-specific speed limits. Traffic deaths were at their peak in the early 70s, around 1,200 road users died in our country each year. Laws such as mandatory seat belts were enacted, which were fiercely opposed, but which today are taken for granted.
